The
detail I chose for this assignment is the fairy door of Michigan Theater. It is
located at E. Liberty Street and Maynard Street. It was not built when the
whole building was built, but it has been installed in 2012. Fairy doors are
installation art which can be found in Ann Arbor. It is door-shaped ornament
installed next to the real entrance of the Michigan Theater. It is about 6
inches tall and made of same materials—which are wood and glass—with the actual
entrance. Actually, the fairy door is made in very similar shape with the real
door of Michigan Theater. It is really hard to define what type of detail the
fairy door is because of it is very unique kind of detail. This miniature kind
of detail of the building is not only aesthetic by itself, but it is also containing
the meaning of cultural aspect. As I mentioned above, there are more fairy
doors can be found in different locations in Ann Arbor. Because it is series of
small doors only can be found in Ann Arbor, it becomes to have cultural and
more artistic value. In addition, a theater is place that people enjoys culture—movies
or shows—and for such cultural place to have a detail which contains cultural
beauty makes aesthetic and functional sense of architecture.
