Building as a whole
Information:
Crisler Center
333 E Stadium Blvd. Ann Arbor, MI
Type: Sublimated on inside, expressive outside and on concourse
The detail I chose for this response was the scoreboard that
hangs from the roof of Crisler Center, the home of the University of Michigan
men’s basketball team.
Though the scoreboard might seem like a large detail to
some, it is an essential part of the beauty and visual appear of the inside of
the building, as well as important piece in the functioning of the building.
The role of this detail in the entire building is to not only provide the
players and fans with the score, but to also provide video replay as well as
interactive fan activities when play is stopped during the basketball game. The
basketball game can still be played without the scoreboard, but experience of
the building is much less appealing without it.
The detail of the scoreboard is also congruent to the building
as a whole. It’s colors, maize and blue, match the colors of the floor as well
as the colors of the seats in the stands. This helps the scoreboard “agree” with
the other pieces of the building and helps the arena come together as a whole.
The collocation, or functional placement, of this detail was also well thought
out, as it is placed hanging from the ceiling over center court so that no
matter where you are in the stadium, you can still see one of the four sides of
the scoreboard.
Overall, the scoreboard at Crisler Center was a well thought
out detail that helps enhance the experience of the building as a whole.
