The detail I have chosen to discuss is the column outside of the Art & Architecture building on North Campus. The column in my mind works as a detail to the A&A building as a whole. The column is the first thing one sees and experiences when approaching the A&A building. It is quite expressive in its nature not just because of its scale but its use of materials. The ends of the column are stone and convey a much older/classic aesthetic. In between the ends of the columns are steel sheets expressing the stone that would have been in place. The scale of the column is quite large - perhaps the second tallest piece of architecture on North Campus (second to the bell tower). Since the scale is quite large is facilitates a larger aura around the building in turn making the space seem much grander than it might really be. However it is still a detail because it does not completely overshadow the building. The reason the column works as a detail for the A&A is that it conveys the larger scope that both the Art & Architecture schools and working to teach. Architecture with artist vision is what the column represents.
